Gender sensitive pedagogy

Dr N. Trakulphadetkrai from the University of Reading, UK leads an international team researching the learning of mathematics through stories.

  He suggests in using mathematics resources you consider the representation of females. In the use of stories to teach maths he suggests you consider:
“1. To what extent does the visibility of female characters differ from that of their male counterparts in:

1.1) the book titles;

1.2) the gender of characters shown on front cover;

1.3) the amount of dialogue given to characters; and

Subject Associations provide professional development and a supportive network of subject specialists.

Not all countries have specialist professional associations and in the UK many are run by volunteers with perhaps a tiny number of paid staff. The associations often are also linked to international subject associations. Should you wish to start up an association in your country then we would expect existing associations in other countries to be willing to give you advice or to work in some sort of partnership.

Stories, rhymes and games

Each culture has its own stories, games and rhymes which help young children understand the world into which they are born. If the stories, games and rhymes address mathematical concepts then children learn naturally to understand aspects of mathematics. We suggest you put together your list of teaching resources through talking to experienced teachers and families in your community or write your own if you can’t  find stories in your language. You'll find many of the links in this guide show you how games can be used in the teaching of mathematics.
